Cosmic Crit’s “Critical Failure Deck” Challenge

Welcome to the February first Friday Fan Challenge. We go to you, our creative, smart, hard-working and downright amazing fans to help up build up the Starfinder universe in fun and inventive ways each month. By the end of this month the players should be (barring death or TPK) at the end of Book 2 and their PC’s at level 5. We though that would be the perfect time to institute our first house rule, and one that will certainly help and hinder them on a weekly basis.

Critical Failures

So, much like the optional rule set in Pathfinder, we want to make a randomized set of cards that we can draw from whenever someone rolls a natural 1 in combat. We will take all the submissions and make a random generator for players to use in their own game too. You can enter as many times as you’d like, and three of our favorite entries will win $10 in Starfinder PDFs. In addition everyone that enters will be entered into a drawing for a special secret prize (we’re not telling yet). Entry Guidelines

Each single entry needs to have three Critical Fumbles on it; One Melee, One Ranged and One Spell Casting.  When someone rolls a natural 1 on an attack with one of these three, the card should either have an immediate effect or require a save to avoid. Here are a few examples:

MELEE: “Slipped Grip”, Your weapon is torn from your grasp and falls to the ground at your feet.

RANGED: “Loose Chamber”, You gun has jammed and requires a DC 15 Engineering check as a move action, or a Standard Action to clear it.

SPELL: “Backfire” Your spell fails and some of the blowback hits you, take 1d8 + 1 Damage per level

Make sure to give the Failure a fun name, and submit your name with your entry, and we will make sure to mention you on the podcast when lady luck turns her back on our players.

Guidelines for Submitting:

• By submitting to this challenge, you give us the right to use your submitted work/piece on Cosmic Crit and distribute it for free. We will also need to edit and balance these in relation to other entries.
• To receive a gift for your selected submission, you must have an active Paizo account and provide that  to us after we use your submission on the show. Please include how you would like to be contacted and credited for your winning submission.
• You can submit multiple times, but if we use 10 of your submissions, you still only get a single gift.
• Please don’t submit anything offensive, inappropriate for a general audience or distasteful. Keep it PG-13.
